part three

River of tears flows;

Loss of love and life torments.

Lift above, reprieve.

chapter 42

It was the year 1984 in San Antonio when the Summer was blazingly hot and MTV ruled the airwaves with the invasion of New Wave and Synth-Pop music. Big hair and breakdancing populated the street corners and arcades were the places to be. Throughout the country, the rise of crack cocaine and the spread of AIDs became major concerns to the general public. And those two issues just happened to converge in San Antonio to spawn the vampires Gabriella, Fausto, and Uriel Santana.

Their parents were Gustavo and Rose Marie Santana. Gustavo was the successful owner of a tire repair shop and Rose Marie was enjoying home life with all three of her children grown and out of the house.

Gabriella was the oldest by a few seconds at thirty-one years-old. She was married with two children and worked part-time as a bank teller.

Her twin brother Fausto was a loose cannon and the black sheep of the family. He often found himself in jail from either drunk driving, disorderly conduct, or for the possession of cocaine. One time it was for all three.

And their younger brother Uriel – at twenty-three years-old – was fresh out of college with a degree in kinesiology and hoped to parlay that into a career in sports medicine. He was an avid reader of supernatural stories and also had a fiancée named Luisa, whom he’d been dating since high school.
